The First Piano Lesson, Jules-Alexis Muenier (1863 - 1942)

"Now these are the high notes ..." Most legitimate, historic piano teaching methods are derived in some way from the work of Carl Czerny (1791-1857) a pupil of Beethoven. He was the first to number the fingers and create exercises based on that numbering, as well as create an entire library of teaching pieces.

The Piano Lesson, Henri Matisse, 1916

This painting depicts the artist's son, Pierre Matisse at his piano lesson. This much studied painting is sometimes seen as Matisse’s answer to Picasso's Cubism. The composition contains symbolic opposing elements of the sensual and curvilinear perhaps suggestive of artistic expression and the angular harder lines representing discipline and order. Painted while his son was actually mobilized in the midst of WW I, Matisse did not know then if his son would return. The “teacher” shown in the background is actually another painting by Matisse titled, Woman on a High Stool, 1914. Note the metronome in the foreground. Also note the carved music stand which contains the brand of the piano, “PLEYEL” (read backwards from our point of view). Pierre Matisse would grow up to become a prominent art dealer in New York.
